UPR is a&nbsp;unique UN mechanism monitoring implementation of human rights obligations of the UN member states, which involves periodic peer review of all 193 UN member states. It is a&nbsp;universal procedure covering all areas of human rights irrespective of thematic focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>In the ongoing 4<sup>th<\/sup> cycle, Slovakia will be reviewed at the 46<sup>th<\/sup> session of the UN Human Rights Council in April\/May 2024. Therefore, we have submitted our individual submission addressing several key issues of human rights protection and promotion in Slovakia, which have been subject to recommendations from the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> UPR cycle, as well as other issues covered by the Centre:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Pointing out the necessity to <strong>bring the Act on Establishment of the Slovak National Centre for Human Rights in line with the Paris Principles<\/strong>, which represent international standards for effective and independent functioning of national human rights institutions.<\/li><li>Warning against the <strong>insufficient realisation of the right to education<\/strong> in relation to segregation of Roma children in education, separate education of children with disabilities and the education of Ukrainian children in Slovakia.<\/li><li>Informing about <strong>violations of Roma rights<\/strong>, particularly in cases of police brutality, hate speech and anti-Roma discourse, discrimination in health care and the need to compensate victims of forced sterilisations.<\/li><li>Addressing <strong>long-term breaches of LGBTI+ rights<\/strong> in Slovakia caused by the absence of legal protection of same-sex couples, accessibility and barriers of medical and legal transitions and stigmatising exclusion of gay and bi- men from blood donation.<\/li><li>Underlying <strong>shortcomings in accessibility of safe abortions<\/strong> and attempts to limit the right to sexual and reproductive health of women.<\/li><li>Alerting against hate speech and harassment, including strategic lawsuits against public prosecutions (SLAPP), affecting <strong>media freedom and safety of journalists.<\/strong><\/li><li>Reporting on <strong>shrinking democratic space for the civil society and human rights defenders<\/strong>, including fragmented regulation and insufficient funding.<\/li><li>Drawing attention to <strong>insufficient and slow process of deinstitutionalisation of social services<\/strong> and inaccessibility of community-based services for persons with disabilities.<\/li><li>Highlighting the need to ensure <strong>protection and realisation of the right to clean, healthy and sustainable environment<\/strong> and the necessity to adopt the climate act reflecting human rights standards.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Submission to the Universal periodic review is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snslp.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Individual-submission-SNCHR_UPR-4th-cycle.pdf\">available in english (pdf)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More information about monitoring and reporting activities of the Centre within UPR is available at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snslp.sk\/en\/activities-of-the-centre\/monitoring-a-reporting\/thematic-reports-and-other-statements\/\">the dedicated webpage<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":11432,"template":"","categories":[],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.snslp.sk\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/aktuality\/11566"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.snslp.sk\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/aktuality"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.snslp.sk\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/aktuality"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.snslp.sk\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.snslp.sk\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/11432"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.snslp.sk\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=11566"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.snslp.sk\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=11566"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.snslp.sk\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=11566"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
