Free legal aid of the Slovak national centre for human rights

Slovak national centre for human rights is national antidiscrimination body and a national institution for protecting and observing human rights in Slovakia.

Everyone and anyone can turn to the Slovak national centre for human rights:

  • In writing at the address of the Headquarters or our regional office
  • Personally at the Centre’s headquarters or at our regional offices

Contentual requirements of a motion

A motion should always include:

  • Name and surname of applicant
  • Title of a specific natural or legal person mentioned by the claimant
  • Specific description of a subject concerned in the motion
  • What does the claimant seek?
  • Copies of documents validating the identity of a claimant

If your claim does not include specified requirements the Centre will via post, e-mail of phone address you for their completion. If you do not specify your claim, it will not be possible to properly handle it.

Personal data protection

The Centre is obliged to remain discreet in matters of data protection in compliance with the current legislature. As a claimant you can request the Centre for keeping your identity anonymous. Every person present in the process of handling a claim, who is aware of the claimant’s identity, is obliged to remain discreetness.

However, if you do not disclose your name, surname and address (legal person doesn’t disclose their name and address) in a claim delivered to the Centre, it is viewed as an anonymous claim. The Centre does not handle anonymous claims.

How do I know that I have been discriminated against?

Definition of discrimination is stipulated by the Equal treatment act. Discrimination appears mostly in the area of work relations, providing goods and services, when accessing social services and healthcare as well as in education and other forms of legal relations.

If I have a suspicion that in a given situation I am being treated differently as would other person in a comparable situation, I seek a reason, why it may be so. Not all forms of unequal treatment constitute discrimination, therefore it is important to designate the reason, why this treatment might occur.

If I have a suspicion, that the reason for my less favorable treatment is connected to my sex, religion, beliefs, race, nationality, marital or other status, skin color, language, political or other views, social origin, property, gender or other status, or reporting criminal activity or whistleblowing, I can submit a motion.


  • My colleague received a promotion even though I was better suited for the position/leadership positions are exclusively occupied by men.
  • I was not promoted, because I already have a child and surely I am going to want another one soon.
  • In the stock keeper job posting the employer did not specify, that he is looking for young healthy men below the age of 40.
  • The employer will not allow employees that are members of LGBTI+ communities to be blood donors in the workplace.
  • Restaurant owner forbid a person from entering solely based on their Roma ethnic origin.
  • When dividing students in classes, the school put students from marginalized Roma communities into a separate classroom, which led to division from the majoritarian society.
